Why Are Eye Exams Important?

If you’re not at risk of developing eye disease, the Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends visiting your optometrist every second year. However, most optometrists would advise patients to have an eye exam performed every year.

There are many eye conditions and diseases that can develop over time without causing you to experience or exhibit any symptoms. Eye exams are your first line of defence, which is why we recommend more frequent exams.

Our eye care team will take the time to thoroughly inspect your eyes using a variety of innovative tools and techniques, so you can walk away with a firm grasp on the state of your eye health.

Is My Eye Exam Covered by Insurance?

Eye Exams are covered by Alberta Health for those individuals 18 or younger, and 65 and older. However, if you have an eye health emergency your emergency appointment will be covered no matter how old you are!

Routine eye exams for adults aged 19-64 are not covered by Alberta Health however they may be covered by your personal or work benefits program. For your convenience, we offer direct billing to most benefit insurance companies.

What Can You Expect From an Eye Exam?

Throughout the exam, we will chat about your health and your family’s health history. This information is useful to your optometrist so that they can tailor the exam to you.

Then, we’ll move on to testing the acuity of your eyes and determining your prescription. Once we determine the strength of your eyes, we will take a look at your overall eye health. The tools used to ascertain your eye health include a fundus camera, OCT scan, and tonometry tests. These tests check for signs of glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and more.

If you need glasses, we will take this time to help you choose your new frames. Our knowledgeable and fashion-forward opticians can help you find the perfect pair of glasses to give you great vision and accentuate your unique style.

If you are interested in contact lenses, your optometrist will measure your eyes to find the best lenses for you.

Depending on your situation, your optometrist may recommend booking subsequent appointments to monitor any concerns they might have.
